Polyamines are polycationic molecules that are present in all organisms and participate in a wide range of biological activities. These molecules have variable chain lengths with at least two amine groups. Polyamines are involved in many basic cellular activities including transcription, RNA modification, protein synthesis and regulation of enzyme activity. In plants, polyamines are involved in many physiological responses including cell division, tuber and root formation, embryogenesis, flower development and fruit ripening. Because of the positive charge of polyamines, they tend to have negatively charged molecules (such as DNA, RNA, phospholipids, and acidic proteins). Direct interaction with these molecules enhances the viability and integrity of cell membranes as well as membrane aggregation and integration (such as endocytosis, secretion, cell division) and the regulation of membrane-based enzymes. They also prevent the lipid peroxidation of the membrane. Interaction with the wall, maintaining the ionic balance, osmotic and pH of the cell (such as buffer) are also other roles of polyamines. These are all cases that show the protective role of polyamines in environmental stresses.
